Rest in Peace Pepe the Frog
by Nathan'ette Burdine: May 10, 2017

According to the BBC, Matt Furie, Pepe the Frog’s creator, has decided that it is time to let Pepe the Frog take his rest.

Pepe the Frog came into being 11-years ago as a member of the comic Boy’s Club.

He started off good, but then Donald Trump and his hater buddies came along and made Pepe bad.

Pepe went from a beloved, easy going fella to a symbol of hate. The alt-righters had taken Pepe’s image and altered it.

They made him a machine gun toting, grenade having, camouflage, swastika wearing, cigarette chain smoking hater of all things living.

The alt-right haters’ action of depicting poor ol’ Pepe there as a fellow hater led to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) placing Pepe on their list.

Needless to say, this didn’t make Pepe’s fans too happy. ADL Director Oren Segal told The Guardian that he is aware that the alt-right haters have maligned Pepe’s good name and image, but that is the very fact why the ADL must alert folks to this new image the alt-right hates have forced ol’ Pepe there to have.

Segal also took to his Twitter page to tell folks that Pepe’s presence on the ADL’s list doesn’t have to be permanent, and that Pepe will be taken off the list if the day comes when the real Pepe is able to stand-up and take down this new Pepe.

Welp, it looks like that day has finally arrived. And it arrived on the day that Furie decided to put ol’ Pepe there down.

Because hey, what better way to build something back up than to tear it down.

In an article for Time Magazine, Furie wrote, “The problem with Pepe is that he’s been stamped a hate symbol by politicians, hate groups, institutions, the media and, because of them your mom. Before he got wrapped up in politics, Pepe was an inside-joke and a symbol for feeling sad or feeling good and many things in between. I understand that it is out of my control, but in the end, Pepe is whatever you say he is, and I, the creator, say that Pepe is love.”

Rest in peace ol’ Pepe there. I hope to see the new, true you sometime in the future.
